An irate mob, comprising mostly women, from the neighbouring Sweeper Colony ransacked and burnt a country liquor shop located at Ward-17 of the Choudwar Municipality, 15 km from here’ on Saturday morning. The mob apparently went berserk after locating a dead body of a youth of their locality lying in a pool of blood near a canal, five km from the liquor shop.

Police said one Ashok Naik (30) and an acquaintance from the colony had gone to the liquor joint on Friday evening. When Ashok did not return home late in the night, his family members searched for him throughout the night. However, his body was found lying near the Dhumabati canal, which is five km from the liquor joint.

Believing that the liquor joint has brought all woes to them and the murder of the youth was somehow linked to the liquor shop, the residents of the colony rushed to the liquor joint and set it on fire after ransacking it. Police said a murder case has been registered and investigations are on to identify the killer.

In another incident, the Mangalabag police of the city retrieved the body of another youth lying in a pool of blood near the Tuberculosis Ward of the SCB Medical College Hospital on Saturday morning. Police had earlier suspected it to be a murder case seeing a liquor bottle and some belongings strewn near the body. But after autopsy, doctors believed it to be a suicidal case.
