The Fall River Public Library will continue its popular Breaker Space program through the summer. The next event is on Aug. 30 from 2-5 p.m. This monthly tech take-apart program for all ages could also be called be called toy take-a-part; break and make; appliance autopsy; or deconstruction station. Whatever you call it, it’s a fun way for kids and teens (and adults) to learn how things work, building STEM skills through hands-on practice. For more information, call the library at 508-324-2700.

Fall River Public Library invites kids ages 12 and younger to sign up for a Summer Reading Safari. As part of the summer reading safari theme, the library will host a full schedule of children’s activities including craft programs, puppet shows, magicians, animal programs, and a weekly storytime on Tuesday mornings at 11 a.m. at the Main Library and Monday mornings at 11 a.m. at the South Branch Library located at 58 Arch Street. The completed reading logs should be returned to the library by aug. 17.

The Summer Reading Program is almost at an end.

Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m., Mystic Drumz will put on their show “The Legend of the Marshmallow.” This interactive tale lets the audience participate using a variety of global instruments. Great for the whole family.

Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 6:30 p.m., Jungle Jim will present his “Libraries Rock the '80s” Show. “Jungle Jim’s tubular balloon magic show combined with comedy, improv and rad elements from 1980s classics makes this one righteous show you won’t want to miss!” Big hair optional.

Also Aug. 15 at 1 p.m., come down to the library to create and submit your essay or drawing for the Spirit of Somerset Essay and Drawing Contest. Aug. 22 at 1 p.m., join us for a Lego Day with building fun. Finally, Aug. 28 at 11 a.m., join the Kids on the Block for a 30-minute puppet show including music and activities.

Don’t miss out on our other ongoing programs: Toddler Story Time on Thursdays at 10:30 am, and Songs and Stories with Miss Lisa on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. These programs are free and open to the public.

Libraries Rock is the summer reading theme. Take part in one of many musical programs.

Harmonica Lessons for Kids continues each Friday at 10:30 a.m.. Sign up today and learn to play the harmonica. This program is free and all participants will get a harmonica.

Learn to play an instrument takes place Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Each week children will learn about a different instrument including, the recorder, harmonica, ukulele, xylophone and snare drum. Some one day rental fees will apply. There is limited space so sign-up is required.  

Mother Goose visits the library in person on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 1 p.m. Join us in a fun and funny show of sweet nursery rhymes and tunes from Mother Goose, Mary Jo Maichack, national award winning minstrel storyteller as she comes to the library with her ukelele, puppets and more. Sing, dance, listen, chant and especially laugh as you join in the fun. 

Adult Services

Every Monday in August, the library will host a music appreciation program for adults. Join Music Masters Studio as they share different music genres each week. Listen to music from different artists, albums and songs. The program takes place from 6:30-7:30 p.m.. Refreshments will be served.

Susan Rogers

Spend a delightful evening at the Swansea Public Library on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. with author Susan Rogers. Susan will be on hand to talk about her book, Discovering Norman:Proving the Former Life of a Ghost. She will answer questions and will have books available for signing.

Tiverton Public Library is located at 34 Roosevelt Ave. New hours for Tiverton libraries are: Monday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday from 1 to 8 p.m.; Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Union Public Library will be open Tuesdays only from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Russ the Magician visits the Tiverton Library: Aug. 15 10:30 a.m. This program is recommended for ages 5+.  *Space is limited. Tickets will be distributed on first come basis starting at 10 a.m.

CS First Club: Music and Sound: Thursday, Aug. 16, 3 to 4 p.m. This eight week program is designed for children entering fourth through sixth grade. Space is limited; registration required.

The Tiverton Public Library offers one-on-one computer skills help sessions with technology librarian, Sam Simas. These meetings are designed to teach you how to use computers, phones, and tablets to connect with information and library services. Topics for these sessions can cover downloading and using eBooks and audiobooks, researching with library databases, navigating social media sites, understanding internet safety and security, and using your phone, tablet, laptop, or ereader. Union Public Library Association is accepting donations of books (no textbooks, encyclopedias or VHS tapes please) for their giant book sale to be held on Saturday, Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chase Cory House, Tiverton Four Corners. All proceeds from this sale will benefit the Association and will help to maintain the Union Public Library, the second oldest library in Newport County. Book donations may be dropped off in the labeled bins at Union Public Library, 3832 Main Road in Tiverton, or Tiverton Public Library, 34 Roosevelt Ave.

The Union Public Library Book Club meeting will not meet during the month of August. The book club will meet next on Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. to discuss "Pachinko" by Min Jin Lee. Copies of the book are now available at Union Library during regular business hours on Tuesdays between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.. All are welcome to join in the discussion.
