Saturday’s rainfall during the day was a welcome change from scorching day-time temperatures and rain in the evenings or nights.
Residents enjoyed the overcast conditions that resulted in the occasional drizzle.
In the 12-hour period ending 8.30 p.m., Nungambakkam recorded 4.1 mm of rainfall and the Meenambakkam 2.6 mm, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.
It said that there was a likelihood of a low pressure forming over the Bay of Bengal.
The rain also brought down day temperatures in the city by 7.3 degrees Celsius, with Nungambakkam recording a maximum of 27.1 degree Celsius. The Meenambakkam station recorded a maximum of 27.8 degrees Celsius, a departure of 6.9 degrees Celsius from normal.
An upper air circulation over West Central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Andhra Pradesh coast is likely bring light rain for two more days to the city and parts of north Tamil Nadu. The sky is likely to remain cloudy, with intermittent rain or thundershowers.
“Usually, the city experiences more rain in August-September than during June-July. Though during the South-west Monsoon there is a strong preference for rain in the evening, convection rainfall can happen in the morning as well. Also, in the last 10 to 15 years, we are getting more rain from the South-west monsoon than say the past 40 years. This type of situation arises when the monsoon trough is a little bit southwards,” weather expert Y.E.A.Raj explained.
