Somnath Chatterjee is on ventilator support after he suffered a mild cardiac arrest on Sunday morning. The veteran politician was admitted at Kolkata's Belle Vue Nursing Home on August 7.
A multi-speciality team of doctors led by Dr Sukaumar Mukherjee are monitoring his condition round-the-clock. His condition is stated to be critical.
Earlier Chatterjee, 89 was discharged from the hospital on August 1 after 40-days of hospitalisation. Last month, the former speaker had suffered a haemorrhagic stroke. But Chatterjee was rushed back to the hospital on the night of August 7.
"He had undergone dialysis on Saturday. Unfortunately Chatterjee suffered a mild heart attack this morning, but was revived. He is in the ICCU and has been put on ventilation," Pradip Tondon, Belle Veu Clinic CEO, said.
A 10-time Lok Sabha MP, Chatterjee was a central committee member of the CPM, which he had joined in 1968. He was the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009.
