When 42-year-old Leena was declared brain-dead by doctors, it was a moment of irreparable heartbreak for the family. But despite grappling with grief, they decided to give three terminally ill others a new life by donating her vital organs.
Her kidneys and liver were donated through ‘Mrithasanjeevani,’ the organ transplantation programme of the State government.
Leena, wife of Sajeev, Kulangara Veedu, Asramam, was admitted to a private hospital in Kollam on August 3 following severe headache.
She was shifted to another hospital the next day and later taken to the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, as there was no change in her condition. She was declared brain-dead by doctors on Sunday morning.
Later, her family was approached by the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS) doctors and coordinators.
Brother’s effort
It was her brother Satheesh Kumar who works with the Health Department who counselled the family on the importance of organ donation and garnered their permission for the same.
Leena is survived by husband Sajeev and sons Adarsh and Adwaidh. Her cremation will be held on Monday at the Polayathodu public crematorium.
