School’s electrician has been arrested; girl was slapped, threatened by accused; victim’s parents called the police after school’s ‘unsatisfactory reply’

A six-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an electrician inside the school premises in New Delhi district, the police said on Friday. The accused has been arrested.

The victim is a Class II student of a government school in central Delhi, the police said, adding that the incident happened on Wednesday and the victim’s parents lodged a complaint on Thursday.

Noticed blood

The victim’s mother spotted blood in her daughter’s undergarments and took her to a hospital on Wednesday.

The doctors confirmed rape, following which the student told her parents about the incident.

On Thursday, her parents approached the school management. After receiving an unsatisfactory reply, they made a PCR call at 1.30 p.m.

A police team reached the school and an investigation was taken up, the police said.

Blindfolded victim

“On Wednesday [August 8] the victim was waiting for her sister, who is also in the same school, to go home when the accused caught her from behind and blindfolded her. Then he took her to the school’s water pumping room and raped her. He had tied the handkerchief around her eyes to conceal his identity. Before setting her free, he slapped her twice and threatened her with dire consequences. The accused said he will kill her and her parents if she told anyone about the incident,” said Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi).

When the accused saw the victim’s sister looking for her, he immediately untied the handkerchief and set the girl free, the officer said.

That is when the victim saw his red T-shirt and got a glimpse of his face, he added. The victim told the counsellor and women police personnel that a man wearing a red T-shirt took her inside the pump room.

She also informed them that she had seen him with the school’s gardener.

Following this, the gardener was held for questioning.

“We zeroed in on 25 non-teaching staff members of the school and their pictures were shown to the victim. She identified the electrician, a resident of Dwarka, and a permanent staff of the school. He was recently transferred to the school from another unit. He was immediately taken into custody,” Mr. Verma added.

A case has been registered under Indian Penal Code Section 376 and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act).

“We have recovered the red T-shirt, a handkerchief and samples of hair from the crime spot. The samples have been sent to FSL. We will a file charge sheet within 20 days,” added Mr. Verma.

The girl was discharged from the hospital after treatment, the police said.
