Officer involved in fatal Somerset crash identified

The crash remains under investigation by the Bristol County District Attorney's office and Massachusetts State Police.

SOMERSET — The officer involved in the early Friday morning crash that took the life of a 20-year-old girl was identified Saturday morning.

Police Chief George McNeil identified the officer as Jonathan Neveu. He said Neveu began his career as a reserve officer in October 2012 and became a full-time officer in January 2016.

McNeil said Neveu has been placed on "Injured on Duty" status for at least a week.

Neveu was responding to a report of a truck being broken into at the Grid Iron Pub around 12:35 a.m. Friday when his police cruiser collided with the Honda Civic being driven by Hailey Allard of Somerset. The crash occurred in the area of Riverside Avenue and Westhill Avenue.

Neveu was heading south when his cruiser collided with Allard's vehicle as she was turning from the northbound lane onto Westhill Avenue.

Her car spun in a circle before stopping and first responding officers began CPR. She was pronounced dead at Charlton Memorial Hospital.

Neveu's cruiser struck a telephone pole, snapping it in half. He suffered a concussion among other injuries and was treated and released Friday morning.
