Navi Mumbai: One person was arrested for allegedly molesting and assaulting a 28-year-old woman on a local train, in Panvel on Friday.
The Government Railway Police (GRP), Panvel, said the accused, identified as Ashok Bhagoji Darade (30), was arrested from Panvel railway station based on a sketch made using the description given by the complainant. According to the complainant, a resident of Khar, she had boarded an Andheri-bound train from Panvel around 8 p.m. on July 22 when the incident took place.
Police Inspector Vrushali Kavanpure, Panvel GRP, said, “The complainant had come to Panvel for trekking, and boarded a local to Andheri from Panvel. She entered the ladies’ compartment, and was the only passenger. The accused entered the compartment and assaulted and molested her. When she tried to raise an alarm, he covered her mouth, made her lie down on the seat and snatched her phone. At Khandeshwar station, he alighted and threw her phone back into the compartment.”
Initially stunned by the incident, the complainant registered the complaint after two days. The police got the sketch made as per the description provided by her. “The accused’s sketch was circulated among our personnel. On Thursday, a man bearing resemblance to the sketch was spotted near Panvel railway station and was nabbed. Later, the complainant identified him. The accused lived near Panvel railway station and worked as a daily wager,” Ms. Kavanpure said.
