Got trapped inside; police suspect car collided with another speeding vehicle

A 23-year-old man was charred to death after his car caught fire near Ambedkar Nagar in the early hours of Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Sumit (23), a resident of Sonipat, Haryana. He was working as a driver for the past six months. The incident came to the fore after the Delhi Fire Service received a call at 1.48 a.m. The police said that an information was received at 1.50 a.m. regarding a road accident at BRT Road near Sheikh Sarai on Saturday.

The officers said they assumed that the car caught fire after colliding with another speeding vehicle. The vehicle, which was loaded with newspapers, caught fire immediately and started blazing.

The deceased was on his way to transport copies of a Hindi daily newspaper from its printing press in Noida for delivery at Gurugram on a routine basis, the police said.

Further investigation revealed that the car was found registered in the name of one Jaspreet Kaur resident of west Jyoti Nagar.

The driver of the car was trapped inside the vehicle and could not manage to come out and sustained severe burn injuries. When he was rushed to a Safdarjung hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, the police said.

Family members of the deceased have been informed. Further investigation is under way. A case under Section 279/304A of IPC has been registered at Ambedkar Nagar Police station.
