Some improvisations can go horribly wrong at disaster zones, something which four migrant workers of a tile factory at Kuttikkattukara in Eloor municipality learned the hard way here on Saturday afternoon.
The workers gained some media coverage and enjoyed it every bit on Friday when they moved along the inundated areas on a raft made out of four big plastic drums.
However, all four of them fell off the makeshift raft near the Periyar river this afternoon.
While three of them were able to swim to safety, one had to hold to his dear life by clutching on to a hanging tree branch.
It was left for the fire and rescue personnel to save him on a rubber dinghy.
Immediately thereafter, 24 migrant workers in the area were relocated to safe zones and police were deployed in the area to avoid any such misadventures. Needless to say, the raft is no longer in service!
