MUMBAI: That many parents-to-be consult astrologers about the most auspicious time for their baby’s birth is known but a suburban hospital on Saturday witnessed an unplanned delivery that had an unusual and happy coincidence: The child’s
birthday coincided with that of four others in the operation theatre.
The newborn’s 29-year-old mother Meghna, obstetrician Suchitra Pandit, neonatologist Chintan Patel and anaesthetist Hemant Shinde too celebrated their birthday on August 11. “The sixth person in the room, my assistant doctor, has her birthday on Sunday,” said Dr Pandit, who delivered Meghna’s baby around 3pm at Surya Hospital, Santacruz. The newborn’s grandmother had delivered Meghna at 2.30, added the doctor.
The new parents were surprised with the coincidences. The father, Akshay, told TOI, “My wife is a bit stunned. We knew Dr Pandit’s birthday was in August but it was amazing that others in the operation theatre too had their birthday today,” he said. Meghna was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and was on insulin for a month. She was not due for another 10-odd days but had been feeling discomfort for few days. “The baby’s head was descending and we were told to get her admitted on Friday night,” said Akshay. Although labour was induced, it did not progress enough and
doctors had to conduct a C-section around 2.30pm.
The birthday bunch cut a cake around 8pm in Meghna’s room.
