A 49-year-old man died after being hit by a car on the Sion-Panvel highway near Kharghar, on Friday.

The deceased Musaddique Kadri, a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) doctor, had come to Kharghar to meet his relatives. He alighted from the bus near Hiranandani flyover and was walking along the road, when a car coming from the Panvel side hit him from behind.

The accused Bhushan Chaudhary, 23, who is an MBA student fled from the spot.

“Kadri suffered severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital by passersby. However, he was declared dead on arrival,” said Mahendra Wagh, assistant police inspector of Kharghar police station.

Wagh said that Chaudhary sped away fearing arrest. “However, the number plate of his car broke into pieces at the accident spot. We collected them and recovered the registration number. We later identified the owner with the help of RTO and arrested him,” Wagh said.

CCTV cameras nearby also showed him flee the spot.

“During interrogation, Chaudhary said that Kadri was wearing a black shirt and a black pant. Since it was raining and it was dark, he could not see Kadri properly and ended up hitting him. Further investigations are on,” Wagh said.

The police have booked Chaudhary under sections 304a, 279, 337, 338 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 184 and 134 of the Motor Vehicle Act.
