The three-coach DEMU train that is slated to begin service this month in the 6-km Ernakulam Junction-Harbour Terminus corridor will initially operate a return trip in the morning and one in the evening, it was decided at a meeting convened here by R.K. Kulshrestha, general manager, Southern Railway.
The number of trips will be doubled to two each in the morning and evening, depending on passenger patronage in the initial weeks. The date on which the services will be launched has not been decided, it is learnt.
Mr. Kulshrestha inspected the Ernakulam Junction and Harbour Terminus stations after holding a meeting with senior railway officials. They included Shirish Kumar Sinha, divisional manager, Thiruvananthapuram, and Hari Krishnan, area manager, Ernakulam.
The GM also directed officials to ensure punctual operation of trains in the State and steps to speed up track replacement and doubling.
A suggestion to build a railway museum in Willingdon Island and to introduce a tourist train from the city to Vallarpadam too were discussed.
