Police seize nineteen bovine animals

Acting on a tip off police seized 19 bovine animals suspected to have been herded to the other destination for slaughter in the wee hours of Friday. The rescued animals include cows, buffaloes and calves.

Bengabad Officer-in Charge Prithivi Sen Das said one person was arrested and an FIR would be registered against unknown persons under sections of The Jharkhand Bovine Animal Prohibition of Slaughter Act 2005 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

"We got a tip-off suggesting many bovine animals, including cows and buffaloes had been brought to the city for sacrifice though it is banned in the state," he said when asked how they got to know.

Sources said the animals might have been brought for sacrifice for Bakrid. He added one driver had turned up to claim ownership of the animals. Initially, the animals were kept at police station premises, but later they were shifted to a cowshed in Giridih, 20km away from the Bengabad police station area. We had specific information about the movement of a large herd of cattle in Bengabad-Chatro road and contacted the police,"Das said, praising Bengabad police for their promptness.

Das also said he had identified a few places in Giridih where bovine animals and camels were herded for illegal purposes, mostly on or around the highway in Barkattha, Barhi and Bagodar in Hazaribagh. Earlier on Thrusday morning Bangabad police had recovered 77 cattles with two trucks and also arrested four persons in this regards.
