HYDERABAD: A month after Cyberabad police commissioner VC Sajjanar advised the senior bank authorities to beef up security at ATMs, burglars struck at an unmanned ICICI ATM kiosk at Tara Nagar in Serlingampally in the early hours of Friday and walked away with ?13.40 lakh. Police said three offenders executed the burglary. The trio used gas cutters and wrapped up their plan in less than 30 minutes.

Around 3.45 am, the robbers, covering their faces, walked into the ATM and cut the lower half of the ATM machine with gas cutters leading to a door. “Once they cut open the door, they laid their hands on the currency stored in the cash trays and stole the entire stock,” a police official said. They completed their ‘operation’ in less than 30 minutes, the official said.

‘Sauntered in, thieves are professionals’

Upon analysis of CCTV footage of the crime scene, police found that the trio were wearing hand gloves, while they sauntered into the ATM in the morning along with the gas cutter equipment in tow.

Police said they have gathered various clues from the scene of the offence anda detailed investigation is on.

A police official said the offence was committed by a professional gang. Similar burglaries at ATMs had taken place in Sanga Reddy district and at a few other locations when there were no security guards present at the time.
