Eastern Cape police have arrested a man for allegedly raping a 77-year-old woman in Mthulu Village, Butterworth earlier this week.

Police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha, said the woman had been sleeping at her home on Wednesday evening, when a young man allegedly kicked in the door of her room at around 23:00.

"He then accosted her and she was overpowered by the suspect. It is then that the suspect allegedly raped her," he said.

Manatha said a case of rape was registered at Butterworth police station and members of the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) investigated, leading to the arrest of a 25-year-old man on Friday.

He said the man would appear before the Butterworth Magistrate Court on Monday, 13 August on a rape charge.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu condemned the alleged rape of an elderly person and the abuse of women and children in general.

He welcomed the arrest of the suspect and congratulated the Butterworth FCS Unit investigators for their swift actions in tracing and arresting the perpetrator.
