GUWAHATI: The Kamrup (Metro) district administration has appealed to all vendors not to sell plastic flags as the district gears up to celebrate
Independence Day. Plastic flags should not to be used by the public in accordance with provisions of the '
Flag Code of India, 2002', consistent with the dignity of the flag, the administration said on Thursday.
"It has been observed by the district administration that some street vendors and shopkeepers have been selling plastic flags in and around the city and national flags made of plastic are used during important events. According to Section 2 of Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act 1971, one should not disrespect the national flag. The use of plastic flags is also a sign of disrespect to the national flag," said deputy commissioner Virendra Mittal.
"So the Kamrup (Metro) district administration appeals to all members of public that flags made of plastic are not to be used in accordance with provisions of the 'Flag Code of India, 2002', consistent with the dignity of the flag," he added.
Meanwhile, the
Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has also started its own initiative to make all markets in the city plastic-free zones. "We are trying to make it happen. It's not possible to bring the change in a single day. We are targeting the marketplaces and interacting with the traders and trying to make them understand the ill-effects of plastic. So, we suggested banning single-use plastics. Gradually, we will cover the other markets as well," said GMC commissioner Monalisa Goswami.
