Wanted Ganjam criminal held after gunfight

In another success for police, a most wanted criminal, Kalu Biswal alias Kalu, was nabbed after an encounter with the police near Aska Charimail Square in Ganjam district on Wednesday night.

Kalu, who received a bullet on his right leg was initially rushed to the Aska Government Hospital and later shifted to the MKCG Medical College Hospital here after his condition deteriorated.

A resident of Baliapalli village under the Kabisuryanagar police station, Kalu was on his way to Balipad on a bike without a number plate, when a police team intercepted him. Spotting the cops Kalu fired two to three rounds on them, in a bid to escape from the spot. But in the retaliatory firing by the cops he was hit on the legs following which he was overpowered and nabbed.

“Acting on a tipoff a team of police followed Kalu and tried to stop him but he fired at them. In response the police personnel fired back at Kalu leaving him injured,” SDPO of Asika Subash Chandra Panda said. Police recovered a mouser, three rounds of bullets and a bike from his possession.

More than 10 cases are pending against Kalu in Aska, Dharakot, Sorda, Badgada and Kabisuryanagar police stations, informed police. It might be mentioned here that it is the second encounter within 24 hours by the Ganjam police.
