Exclude Assam from proposed Citizenship Act, says BJP ally

NEW DELHI: With Modi government keen on passing the law to help Hindu migrants from neighbouring countries gain citizenship, the Bodoland People’s Front has demanded that Assam and north-east be excluded from the ambit of the proposed Citizenship Act.

It has also demanded that citizenship be barred for migrants from Bangladesh. Biswajit Daimary, Rajya Sabha MP from BPF, a BJP ally, said the north-east region and India have serious problems with people who have come from Bangladesh.

“Assam and northeast should be treated differently. There should be a clear mention that except Bangladesh, every person (migrant) can be given citizenship… and this bill will not be valid for north-east and Assam,” he told TOI.

Daimary said the Citizenship Act was problematic because it went contrary to the assurance given to Assam in the accord signed in 1985.
