It's great to see Porsche giving the 993 generation some love again.
In a new video, Porsche once again teases its enigmatic Project Gold. The company promises "a classic body is the starting point for a vehicle that will ultimately become a truly unique piece," but so far it appears to be a 993-generation 911 Turbo S with an updated interior and wheels. The automaker's Classic division says this is a special machine requiring 18 months of construction, so there must be something very different about the car that the firm isn't showing yet.
The latest clip shows off the cathodic dip painting process that gives the classic bodyshell the same coating as modern Porsches.
Porsche Goes For The Gold:
The latest teaser definitively reveals the 993 body that forms the basis for the Project Gold. The intakes in the rear fenders identify it as a Turbo S. Contrary to the design sketches in the original teaser video, it doesn't appear that the development team makes any modifications to the rear section of the roof.
The Project Gold also features a set of black, five-spoke wheels that have gold accents in the center and around the rim. They should lend a handsome look to the classic Porsche. Inside, the company fits seats with perforated leather for the center sections and fine-grained hides for the bolsters. Gold stitching lends a pop of color to the seams and the "Turbo" embroidery on the headrest.
Porsche isn't saying yet when it intends to debut the Project Gold but promises to release a new teaser on August 17. Monterey Car Week at the end of August could be a great place to unveil this updated classic because the event brings together so many wealthy sports car enthusiasts. Alternatively, rumors suggest Porsche might debut the new 911 at the Paris Motor Show in October, and having this special car alongside the future generation could be a great photo op.
