Even though the State Government has announced stringent  punishment against ragging in educational institutions, girl students of the Government Engineering College here on Thursday alleged ragging in a college hostel by their seniors.

Sources said some 3rd year girl students of the college were allegedly ragged by 4th year girl students in the hostel on Wednesday night.

The seniors allegedly abused the junior students over the issue of power failure. The situation turned ugly when the seniors stopped the juniors from having their dinner at night.  As a result, a girl student fell ill and was admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH). However, no police complaint was lodged in this connection.

On the other hand, the college authorities said an inquiry has already begun into the incident by a committee and after its report is submitted, appropriate action would be taken if the accused students are found guilty.

It may be mentioned that Odisha is ranked sixth in ragging in the country.
