governor P Sathasivam has called off ‘At Home’ celebration to be held at Raj Bhavan on
Independence Day ‘in view of the alarming situation prevailing in Kerala due to the fury of the monsoon.’ The event was scheduled to be held at 6.30 pm on Wednesday.
The governor also decided to donate from his salary Rs 1 lakh to the chief minister's distress relief Fund (CMDRF). He also appealed to all to donate generously to the CMDRF.
“The reception has been called off in view of the alarming situation prevailing in Kerala due to the fury of the monsoon, which has already claimed 27 lives and caused extensive damage in most districts of the state,” said a statement issued from Raj Bhavan here on Friday.
The governor also appealed to people to cooperate with rescue and rehabilitation work by abiding by the directions of the government and the disaster management agencies.
The governor, in his statement, also expressed satisfaction over the relief operations being carried out by the state government.
TN, K’taka CMs donate to CMDRF: Chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka announced donation of Rs 5 cr and Rs 10 cr respectively to CMDRF. Expressing gratitude to the CMs of the neighbouring states, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in a statement, appealed to individuals, organizations and institutions to contribute generously to the relief fund.
The CMDRF, during the period from July 26 to August 9 has received Rs 1.75 crore as donations. “Time calls for all of us to stand together and face the situation,” Vijayan said in his statement.
