This refers to the article, “Act before it’s too late” by Kota Sriraj (July 09). Since decades, India has failed to chalk out a priority plan to sort out the multitude of problems plaguing the country. Obviously, the worst casualty has been the agriculture sector. Our farmers remain unequipped to perform the task. They are an unequal match to the rising problems and challenges facing this sector. Climate change conditions have added to their woes.

It was a known that technological and chemical inputs offered by giant multinationals have a damaging ecological impact, particularly on soil fertility and groundwater quality. The entire official apparatus along with hordes of stakeholders, have failed to create a congenial ambiance for the farmers.

The pioneers of organic agriculture initially had limited impact, barring presenting an better alternative. Recent rush into this segment, together with innovative solutions, provided for creative biofertilizers, nutrients and environmental-friendly pesticides, insecticides and other bio-chemicals. This has opened a new promising field for the farmers.

They may now look for a new inspiration to follow methods and technology in their effort to create a new agriculture and livestock development as they enrich themselves while protecting environment.
