Rugby Championship schedule change on the cards?

2018-08-10 19:06

Cape Town - SANZAAR, the southern hemisphere's rugby governing body, is reportedly considering a Rugby Championship schedule change in 2021 that may benefit the Springboks.

The current status quo requires the Springboks to play three consecutive Rugby Championship Tests on the road -  the most of any of the four nations.

Australia, Argentina and New Zealand each play two Tests away, but the All Blacks are the only ones to host three home games on the trot.

However, according to a report on Fairfax Media, SANZAAR could move away from the format which has been in place since 2012.

One of the prospects that have reportedly been raised is the suggestion of rotating home double-header matches against a single nation.

That format may see the Boks playing two home games against the Wallabies as well as two away games against Argentina in one year, and then rotating with those nations the next year.

The format may alleviate the Boks’ travel burden.

Since 2012 when Argentina joined the competition, the All Blacks have won five of six editions, with the only exception being Australia's 2015 triumph.

The 2018 Rugby Championship starts next Saturday (August 18) when the Wallabies host the All Blacks in Sydney (12:00 SA time), while the Springboks entertain Argentina in Durban later in the day (17:05).
