More than a year after his second wife, who was five months pregnant, went missing from Vajreshwari in Palghar district; the Mumbra police on Wednesday arrested police constable Arun Shelar on charges of adultery and kidnapping his second wife. The 47-year-old constable was already married when he tied the knot with the missing woman in May 2017.

Shelar works as a constable in Thane jail and stays in Kalyan’s Netavali area. He was already married and had two children from his first wife when he married Jasintha, 33, in 2017. Jasintha has been missing since July 2017.

Nelson Gomes, 23, Jasintha’s younger brother, who works in real estate, said, “My sister met Shelar in 2016 when she had some work in court. After they exchanged numbers, they began talking over the phone regularly and later one day Shelar asked for marriage. They both got married on May 3, 2017”.

According to the police, Jasintha was three-months pregnant at the time of their marriage.

“Even after marrying Shelar, my sister used to stay at our place. On July 20, 2017, my sister told me that she is going to Vajreshwari temple to seek blessings. She told me over the phone that she had reached Vajeshwari. On July 27, when I saw Shelar in Thane, I asked him about my sister and he avoided my question. He told me to not to ask him this question. When I repeatedly asked, he told me to lodge a missing person’s complaint and said that the police will investigate the case.”

On July 28, 2017, a missing complaint for Jasintha was lodged with the Mumbra police station.

In February this year, Mumbra police told Gomes that they had found Jasintha’s last location, which was at Vajreshwari, but the mobile phone was found in Gujarat.

“We traced the man who was using the phone and interrogated him but nothing related to Jasintha was found. We have formed a team and a search operation is going on. We also produced Shelar in court and he was remanded in police custody till August 14. We are investigating to know if he has done anything wrong to the woman. The missing complaint will also be verified” said D Swami, deputy commissioner of police from zone 1.
