BHUBANESWAR: The higher education department on Thursday initiated inquiry into the alleged irregularities in two premier universities including Ravenshaw and
Berhampur. The inquiry has been initiated following the
chancellor's order to conduct a probe and submit report within 60 days.
"We received a large number of complaints over various irregularities in these two universities. The chancellor as well as the government has taken the allegations seriously and started a probe. The types of allegations ranges from 50 to 60 different natures," said additional secretary of the department, P K Das.
The allegations on various types of irregularities brought in
Ravenshaw University included mode of recruitment of assistant professors, associate professors and professors of the university, process of recruitment of guest faculties by respective departments, mode of promotion under career advancement scheme, purchase of various items by the university. A team headed by Das will visit the university on August 17, he informed.
Similarly in
Berhampur University irregularities were found in audit report and students unrest witnessed after as many as 320 students failed in pre-degree examinations.
"A team headed by me went to the university to enquire about the failing of so many students in different colleges and discovered that the internal mark of the students was not included in their final marks leading to the goof up. Now the marks have been added and results were declared again immediately. The team will visit again to enquire into other issues," said Das.
Sources said, a mismatch between bank deposits and expenditure of the varsity to the tune of Rs 19.64 crores was reported by the registrar of the university. Besides, former students of the university, members of the lawyers' association in Berhampur and other social activists had earlier submitted memoranda to the chancellor, state vigilance and superintend of police.
