LUDHIANA:Can a chemical simply print currency note on a plain paper? That is exactly what a gang of fraudsters claimed and used it as a bait to trapnumerous people across several cities of Punjab while promising them threefold returns on their investments.
The gang’s run finally came to a halt in Ludhiana after the Dehlon police arrested six of its members.

The police also seized bundles of white paper covered with currency notes from their possession.

The accused were identified as Soma Singh of Sangowal village, Rachhpal Singh of Raikot, Budh Singh of Raikot, Neeral of Khanna, Ram Singh of Jagraon and Dogar Singh of Kanganwal. The police have also seized their multi-utility vehicle in which they were travelling.

During the course of investigation, the police came to know that the gang had made Rs 1.25 lakh by fooling people in Hoshiarpur, Rs 2.5 in Tanda and Rs 2.5 lakh in Jalandhar. The gang members already facing trial in similar cases in Khanna and Moga.

ASI Davinder Singh, investigating officer from Dehlon police station, said the accused were nabbed following a tip-off. They were roaming in the area trying to lure people with their scheme, he added.

“After receiving cash from people, the accused would give bundles of plain papers covered with Rs 2,000 currency notes on each side of bundle. Before victims would open the bundle to check all the notes, one of the gang members would fall on the road pretending that he had suffered a cardiac arrest and then they would flee the spot,” he said.

A case under Sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) of IPC has been registered against the accused.

Meanwhile, the court on Thursday sent the accused to one-day police custody.
