FALL RIVER — If you’re looking to shed weight and get healthy, two new businesses have added to a growing wellness industry in the area.

Burn Boot Camp has opened at 101 President Ave., a franchise new to the SouthCoast, that’s geared toward women with 45-minute workouts and complimentary child care during most sessions.

Owner Christina Shemenski said Burn is a “different concept” than the usual gym. Visitors won’t find a single treadmill on the floor. They will find “camps” each day that work different parts of the body for overall fitness.

“No two workouts are ever the same,” Shemenski said. “Every day is different. It just keeps it interesting.”

Each workout burns between 500 and 700 calories.

Burn trainers offers exercises that can be done in more than one way, so everyone can “tailor your workout to your level.”

Burn opened on July 15 and already there’s a “community of Burn sisters,” Shemenski said. The camaraderie members have found “keeps people accountable.”

Some recent workouts on the Monday to Saturday “weekly protocol” listed online were: full body strength and conditioning, core conditioning, metabolic conditioning, 1,000 rep whiteboard challenge, lower body partner circuit, and athletic conditioning.

Burn Boot Camp members enjoy a universal membership. And, they’ll find that “leg day” in Fall River is still “leg day” at other locations in the country.

Currently, new members can join for $30 for 30 days. Prices beyond the first month are not listed online, per company policy, but are available by contacting Burn Boot Camp. The 9 a.m. Saturday camp is free to those who would like to give Burn a try.

Camps are held six days a week at 5:30, 6:30, 8:30, and 9:30 a.m.; and 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Burn Boot Camp is closed on Sundays. Classes after 5 p.m. are coed.

Burn sells its own fitness clothing line, plus clean protein powder, along with Shaklee supplements and nutritionals.

Shemenski said Burn Boot Camp is a company that is growing and expanding with its franchises.

“There were none in New England until this year,” Shemenski said. “We’ve had just great excitement about Burn.”

Another wellness business has been expanding into the area in the past year or so.

Just look for the telltale lime green curtains outside these secret shake establishments. Those who are in-the-know slide in for their name-brand protein shakes.

Owners have asked The Herald News not to publicize the name of these popular shake bars, per company protocol. With no intention of getting anyone in trouble, The Herald News obliged.

It’s an international protein brand typically sold through sales distributors. However, with the addition of store fronts, it also offers members and walk-ins a tea and a protein shake in the $10 range. They’ve become popular places for light lunches and post workout recharges.

The newest addition is Nutrition on Davol, located at 1082 Davol St., inside Commonwealth Landing. Owners Sue Young and Ana Leite also run Davol Grooves, a workout facility next door.

Leite said she’s lost 24 pounds since October by using protein shakes and working out.

“We’re an example for our clients,” Leite said. “Protein is so important in your meal plan.”

Young said: “The product is good. The product works.”

And, the shakes come in a variety of flavor concoctions like birthday cake, strawberry shortcake, key lime pie, and mocha latte, to name a few.

Each shake has less than 300 calories.

Nutrition on Davol is open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Other local shake locations are: Vital Nutrition, 125 Broadway, and Nutrition Addiction, 18 Pocasset St., both of Fall River; and Vybe Nutrition & Fitness, 35 State Road, Westport.
