Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.

Arathi Arun (42), Dentist and powerlifter
Chennai:
I began working out in the gym in a bid to lose weight two years ago. After I began working out, I started lifting more weights and was being complimented for my efforts. Just a year ago, encouraged by the appreciation, I wanted to try my luck at powerlifting and began training. My coaches are Vimal Raj and SP Babu. I was not very successful in the first competition, and I emerged fourth.
I finished second at the meet being held at Kozhikode (Kerala) last month. I missed the gold by just 2.5 kg. I have a parallel career as a dental surgeon and I have been practising in the field for more than 15 years. Now, with my additional role, I also squeeze in my responsibilities as a mother to my two children. My day begins with my appointments with patients.
Then I head to the gym to work out and lifting, before heading home to be there for my children. People comment about how hard my hands have become. And whenever I am in doubt, my son, who is 12 years old and is an international kickboxer, motivates me to go for it. I have a very supportive family who have stood by me. I am now eyeing the meet in Asia to make it to the next level.
