Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday expunged certain remarks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi made in the House that were found to be “objectionable”.
The remarks made by the Prime Minister, while referring to BK Hariprasad, the opposition’s nominee for the Deputy Chairman’s post, were expunged after some members made a demand in this regard, according to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.
RJD MP Manoj Jha had protested the remark and had asked the Chairman to expunge it on Thursday.
Chairman Naidu had said in the House that he would look into the remarks and see if there was something objectionable.
The remarks were made by the Prime Minister while felicitating newly-elected Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh in the House on Friday.
Remarks made by the Prime Minister are rarely expunged.
Hariprasad said it was unfortunate that Modi had lowered the dignity of the House.
The Chairman had also expunged a word uttered by Union Minister Ramdas Athawale during the felicitations.
With 232 members out of the effective strength of 244 voting, NDA candidate Harivansh comfortably sailed through with 125 votes, while BK Hariprasad managed to get support of 105 members.
