Sahib’s father files complaint accusing police of son’s death

The Nuh police on Thursday constituted a four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a probe into the death of truck driver Sahib at Patakpur village during a crossfire between the locals and the police, after his father gave a written complaint against the police.

“A four-member SIT headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sukbhir Singh has been constituted for a detailed probe into the matter. The complaint made by deceased’s father Saheed has also been received,” said Nuh Superintendent of Police Nazneen Bhasin.

She said Sahib’s family had also agreed for post-mortem.

Sahib, a resident of Naheda village, was killed in an exchange of fire between the police and the locals at Patakpur on Tuesday after villagers allegedly attacked an Uttarakhand Police team to prevent the arrest of Sabbir, an accused in a burglary case.

Though the police said that it was not clear as to who fired the shots killing Sahib, the locals held a panchayat on Wednesday blaming the police for the death, seeking action against them.

Mr. Saheed, in his two page complaint, alleged that he along with his son were talking to one Akbar in the fields on the outskirts of the village to hire a driver when four-five police vehicles pulled over near them.

‘No retaliation’

He said that the policemen were heavily armed and Sub-Inspector Jitender Singh ordered them to open fire without provocation.

Mr. Saheed said they had lied down on the ground, but a bullet hit Sahib in the stomach. He also denied the locals having fired at the police in retaliation, and claimed to have recovered nine empty cartridges from the spot.

20 policemen named

He has named more than 20 policemen in his complaint, alleging that the two FIRs registered by the police earlier in this connection were based on wrong facts.

Former Transport Minister Aftab Ahmed said the family had decided not to bury the body till the time they got the justice.

The locals along with the political and religious leaders and social activists have been holding an indefinite dharna at grains market in Punahana, seeking action against the police besides other demands.
