The National Investigation Agency (NIA) busted a counterfeit currency racket and arrested four people, including a woman, in two raids — one at a house in BDA Layout in Alur and another at Srirampura on the outskirts of Bengaluru. They recovered fake currency totalling ₹7 lakh of which ₹4.34 lakh were counterfeit ₹2,000 notes.
Acting on information about a fake currency racket in Alur, an NIA team led by Inspector Vinod B. Kadam, with the help of the jurisdictional Madanayakanahalli police, raided the house in BDA Layout and intercepted Raju, Gangadhar Kolkar and Sajjad Ali. They were found with 217 fake ₹2,000 currency notes.
Police said they suspect the racket has international ramifications and that Sajjad Ali, who hails from West Bengal, was procuring counterfeit currency from across the border. It would be smuggled into Bengaluru where the money was being pumped into the market.
After questioning the trio, officials raided a house in Srirampura on Wednesday and recovered fake currency of ₹2.5 lakh from a woman who lived there.
