To create awareness regarding horrors of wars, particularly of nuclear ones post-Hiroshima and Nagasaki devastation in August 1945, an ‘Anti-War Peace Day’ was observed jointly by the Campaign for Peace, Kandhamal and the Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace (CNDP) here on Monday.

Hundreds of students and citizens took out a procession from the Mahatma Gandhi statue with chanting of slogans like “No war- we want peace”, “Stop war - save world”, “No bombs- we want bread”.  The rally culminated at the Sanjay Smruti Govt Women's College where a meeting was held under the chairmanship of eminent rationalist D Mohan Rao.

Campaign for Peace secretary Narendra Mohanty narrated the objective of holding the Anti- War Peace Day.

“War is not a necessity for common masses, rather it is necessary for rulers and exploiters to use common people for their vested political and economic interest. There are no basic differences between the interests of common people around the globe. But, as part of their divide and rule policy, corporate and rulers always use common people of one country against neighboring countries. We should understand such heinous conspiracy of rulers,” said Mohanty.

Among others, Prof Prasanna Bishoyi, Rajkishor Padhi, Tarulata Parida, Suranjan Nayak, Prof Babaji Behera, Yudhistir Mohanty and V Subramanyam Das spoke.

Many college and high school students presented their views against wars and pledged for world peace.
