PUNE: Two men armed with sharp weapons robbed a
Dehu Road resident of his radio cab and cellphone — together worth Rs2.09 lakh — in Pimpri on Sunday night.
Ajinath Nagargoje (32),
the cab driver, has lodged a complaint with the police. The incident took place at 11pm at Nehrunagar.
According to the complaint, Nagargoje received a call from passengers, who were waiting at Santoshimata Chowk in Nehrunagar.
“The cab driver went to the chowk to pick up the passengers. They were standing on the other side of the road when Nagargoje reached the chowk. As Nagargoje halted his cab, two men — one armed with a stick and the other with a knife — walked up to the vehicle,” assistant inspector N D Waghmare said.
The passengers too walked towards the cab. However, the two armed men chased them away on the threat of dire consequences.
At knifepoint, they warned Nagargoje to not try anything, barged into the cab and told him to drive away.
The duo took the
car to the MIDC area in Pimpri, Waghmare said, adding “There, the duo asked Nagargoje to get out of the car. They then fled from the spot,” he said.
Apart from the car, the suspects also took away Nagargoje’s cell phone and important documents, Waghmare said.
Police said that the area is under CCTV surveillance and that they are trying to obtain footage showing the suspects around the cab. “The cab is not traceable. However, we think that the suspects are residents of the same neighbourhood,” he said.
This was the third incident of carjacking within a month. There were two such cases reported in the second week of July. Both cases had occurred within the span of 24 hours.
