Damage to paddy polders and houses evaluated

An inter-ministerial team led by A.V. Dharma Reddy, Joint secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, on Wednesday visited areas affected by floods and sea erosion in Alappuzha district.

The Central team held discussions with District Collector S. Suhas and other officials. They later visited Kuppapuram in Kainakary grama panchayat and inspected the waterlogged portions of the Alappuzha-Changanassery road. They went to the interior parts of Kuttanad in a speed boat. The team evaluated damage caused due to sea erosion at Madhavamukku and Valanjavazhi in the district.

Officials said the Central team had examined submerged paddy polders and houses destroyed in nature’s fury.

They also visited areas in Upper Kuttanad.

Narsi Ram Meena, deputy director, Central Electricity Authority; R. Thankamani, director , Central Water Commission; and Chahat Singh, assistant director, Rural Development; and others were part of the team.
