Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said his party organised a protest ‘Sansad Se Sadak Tak’ (from Parliament to streets) against the Deoria women shelter home case on Tuesday but the state government was sitting quietly to escape blame.

In a press statement, Akhilesh said while the issue was raised in the Parliament, party’s workers and leaders came out on the streets to protest. “While the leader of opposition in UP Vidhan Sabha Ramgovind Chaudhary was on his way to lead a dharna in Deoria, he was arrested at Bhagalpur on Deoria border. This is shameful,” he said.

SP MPs, led by Kannauj MP Dimple Yadav, protested outside the Parliament in Delhi and also raised the issue during the session.

Attacking BJP governments at the Centre and the state over Deoria and Muzaffarpur shelter homes cases, the MPs held placards like ‘New India rehne do, betiyon ko chain se jeeney do’ (Forget New India rhetoric, first let the girls live in peace), and ‘Beti Bachao ko amal mein lao, naaron se na dhyaan bhatkao’ (Make save girls a reality rather than diverting attention by sloganeering).
