A 28-year-old man was arrested for allegedly thrashing his wife in front of a five-star hotel in Chanakyapuri on Monday evening, the police said on Tuesday.
An FIR was registered and Sandeep Vig was arrested on Tuesday, they said.
Ritika Sethi (27) alleged that was beaten up by her husband, resident of Shalimar Bagh, in presence of her mother-in-law and a friend, the police said.
They got married in January 2016 and started fighting about a year ago over monetary issues, the victim said. “He works with his father and gets a limited amount of money. He used to force me to bring ₹2 lakh per month. I started a housekeeping business a year ago,” she said.
She was allegedly asked to go to her parents’ house in May on the pretext of resolving issues with her husband, the police said.
Approached women cell
When she returned in June, her in-laws said claimed they had disowned Sandeep and so she could not stay with them.
The victim, who was staying with her parents, approached the women’s cell two weeks ago. The hearing is due on Thursday.
Ritika alleged that Sandeep and her in-laws suspected her of having an extramarital affair and even followed her from her workplace in Janakpuri on Monday.
“I had to meet a friend for work at a hotel. When I stepped out, my husband broke the window of my car and thrashed me with a rod. He pulled my hair and punched me in front of the public,” she said, adding that her friend intervened and punched the accused in an attempt to save her.
Sandeep then allegedly forced her into the car and took her to Subroto Park police post “to show that he was bleeding after my friend punched him”, Ritika told the police. Meanwhile, her friend called the police.
The victim’s statement was recorded and she was taken for medical examination, the police added.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Madhur Verma said a case has been registered on charges of rash driving, causing hurt, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation and common intention, and an investigation is under way.
