On a day when five states held elections, the two most prominent races were too close to call late Tuesday. In a special election for a House seat in Ohio, Republican Troy Balderson held a slim 1,700-vote lead over Democrat Danny O'Connor with all precincts reporting, though some absentee and provisional ballots were still left to be counted. The race was seen as a possible indicator of a "blue wave" in the midterm elections, as the district has been solidly Republican for decades and won by President Donald Trump by 11 percentage points in 2016. Even if O'Connor loses, Democrats will likely be encouraged by the narrow margin. In Kansas, Trump-backed Kris Kobach was neck-and-neck with Jeff Colyer in the Republican gubernatorial primary, with about a third of ballots left to be counted. Meanwhile, in Missouri, a Republican "right to work" measure was soundly defeated, in a major victory for unions.
