UP again: In Hardoi home, locals shown as inmates, all for the grant

With focus on women shelter homes across the state, more skeletons are tumbling out of closet.

In one such case, 19 of the 21 women inmates were found missing from a shelter home in Hardoi during a surprise inspection by the district magistrate.

Investigations have now revealed that the NGO running the shelter home had shown local women as inmates to keep getting the government grant.

Pulkit Khare, district magistrate, Hardoi, said he has recommended the government to blacklist the NGO and cancel the registration.

A criminal case has also been registered against Mohammad Razi and Aarti, founder and superintendent of the NGO, Ayesha Seva Sansthan.Khare had inspected the shelter home in Beniganj on Monday.

It was found that 19 out of 21 inmates mentioned in records were locals, who were called in whenever there was an inspection of the shelter home.

The NGO had last received the grant of Rs 4.50 lakh in 2016-17.

District probation officer (DPO) Sushil Kumar Singh said his team was recording the statements of women who live with their families nearby but figure in the inmates’ register.

In another case, not a single child was found in the shelter home for children in Auraiya. Another shelter home run by Pragya Seva Sansthan was found running without any electricity in Kanpur.

As per records, the NGO had not paid the rent for the building for last eight months.
