Beawar Municipal Council chairperson Babita Chauhan and her husband Naresh Chauhan were arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday while accepting a bribe of Rs 2.25 lakh.

They were accused of demanding a bribe of Rs 5.5 lakh from a doctor for conversion of a complex for commercial use. “Dr Rajiv Jain had submitted a complaint against Chauhan that she has asked for a bribe of Rs 5.5 lakh to convert his complex for commercial use, of which she received the first instalment of Rs 2.25 lakh today (Wednesday),” said Muhammed Ismail Khan, the circle inspector of ACB Ajmer.

There is one more corruption case pending against Chauhan, in which she had allegedly received a shop in bribe. The ACB team recovered papers of that too, Khan said. In the case, she took a shop in bribe from Gurusharan Prasad in lieu of map clearance of his commercial property in April this year, he added.

ACB has also recovered more than 50 official files from Chauhan’s residence related to land conversion and map clearances. “We will investigate if she was keeping those files for want of some monetary benefits,” said Khan, adding that the bureau has also arrested an accomplice of the couple named Shiv Prasad Sahu.

Meanwhile, in Nagaur, a patwari (revenue official) was caught taking Rs 8,000 for shifting of a tube well. Bastiram of Khinwsar tehsil demanded Rs 10,000 saying that the tube well was illegal and it would be seized. Later, he settled for Rs 8,000, an ACB official said.
