CT City ready to rise against their 'bogey team'

2018-08-08 08:56

Cape Town - Baroka FC will be aiming to bounce back from their opening-day defeat when they host Cape Town City in the Absa Premiership on Wednesday night.

Bakgaga made an underwhelming start to the 2018/19 campaign on Saturday as they lost 1-0 at AmaZulu in Durban, with Siyethemba Sithebe netting the winner for the hosts.

Last season, the Limpopo outfit won only four games at home, while City's away record was similar - they managed just four wins on the road.

"The target is simple, we need to get in to the top eight, we have to be in that bracket. We must," said Baroka coach Wedson Nyirenda.

"We need to get to over 30 points in the first 15 games. I believe that is a possibility."

Meanwhile, the Citizens made a positive start to their season at the weekend by claiming a comfortable 2-0 victory over SuperSport United at Cape Town Stadium.

Roland Putsche and Craig Martin secured the win with second-half strikes.

Asked about the upcoming clash with Baroka, City coach Benni McCarthy said: "We are likely to get one chance to make it count.

“They were our bogey team last season. We couldn't get one over them."

Benni believes that with their new signings City can avoid losing against Bakgaga back-to-back in the Premiership this season.

"We have a new keeper now (Peter Leeuwenburgh) who won’t let goals in from shots from 45 yards out‚" McCarthy said‚ referring to former goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters.

"We are more solid in goal and at the back and now we added two strikers. Matthew Rusike is a revived man and Shaka (Siphelele Mthembu) has shown his qualities.

"Those were the two areas where we lacked against Baroka last season. I remember being so furious that we threw points away and then they also knocked us out of the Telkom."

Kick-off is at 19:30.
