However, with ever-increasing tourism numbers, mass tourism is taking its toll on local environments and their inhabitants.

Although many tourism companies and hoteliers are taking important steps to reduce the impact of over tourism, travellers should also take steps to make sure that their trips aren’t contributing to environmental and cultural ruin.

Sustainable travel is fast becoming the buzzword in global tourism.

So what does it actually mean to be a sustainable traveller? The UNWTO says that sustainable tourism can be defined as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts”.

National Geographic says that sustainable tourism can imply taking part in environmentally friendly practices, protecting cultural and natural heritage and providing tangible economic and social benefits for local communities.

Participating in environmental conservation, protecting wildlife, supporting cultural heritage and employing local guides are some of the ways by which a tour company can offer sustainable travel.

Sustainable Travel International recommends that you do not take part in wildlife petting, animal selfies, watching dancing monkeys and elephant rides.

Be sure to visit only attractions that do not capture animals from the wild and provide healthy and adequate living conditions. While travelling, keep your hands to yourself and don’t feed or touch animals as it can alter their natural behaviour. Finally, be careful about not buying any souvenirs made from animals, such as ivory products. Always be kind to the natural environment.
