In a big boost to its comeback in the passenger vehicle business, Tata Motors’ compact SUV Nexon has secured 4-star safety rating in Global NCAP crash test.

The Nexon, which is sold in its standard version with frontal double airbags, frontal double pretensioners, ABS brakes and Isofix anchorages, achieved a strong result of four stars for adult occupant protection and three stars for child occupant protection, said a statement of Global NCAP, a UK-based safety and testing organisation.

Tata Motors has released the Nexon with safety features that can offer 4-star adult occupant protection with good protection for the head and neck of driver and passenger and adequate protection for their chests with a stable structure at 64km/hour offset deformable barrier crash test.

The Isofix anchorages with Isofix child restraint systems (CRS) has helped the model to achieve three stars for child occupant protection. The rearward facing CRS installed with Isofix anchorages offer good protection to 18-months-old child, while the Isofix forwards facing installed CRS offers good protection for head and limited protection to the chest, the statement said.

“The four stars awarded to the Tata Nexon represent a very strong result from a major Indian car manufacturer. This impressive safety performance is comfortably above the new crash test standards applied in India to new models since October 2017. It is very encouraging to see Tata aiming high for safety and a great example for others to follow. The race is clearly on for India’s first 5-star car,” said David Ward, Secretary General of Global NCAP.

This is the second passenger vehicle of Tata Motors to secure 4-star safety rating from Global NCAP. Two years ago, its compact sedan Zest had secured a 4-star rating.

Meanwhile, Global NCAP will host its first-ever World Congress in New Delhi during September 26–29, 2018. The Congress will bring together the community of New Car Assessment Programmes (NCAPs) worldwide to share the experience about independent consumer vehicle safety rating.

A major feature of the World Congress will be the Indian launch of the #StopTheCrash campaign, including live demonstrations of life-saving crash avoidance technologies, including Electronic Stability Control, as well as the publication of new Global NCAP’s crash test results.
