S&P's small-cap and mid-cap indexes hit records, while the S&P 500 lags

The S&P's trackers for small capitalization and mid-cap stocks have broken out to new highs, while the large-cap S&P 500 SPX, +0.35% has a little more to go. The S&P 500 was up 0.4% in afternoon trade, and needed to rise another 0.4% to pass the Jan. 26 record close of 2,872.87. Meanwhile, the S&P Mid Cap 44 MID, +0.36% was up 0.4%, and on track for a record close, and the S&P Small Cap 600 SML, +0.29% tacked o 0.2% and was also headed for a record. The Russell 2000 Index of small cap stocks RUT, +0.30% was up 0.3%, but needed to climb another 1.1% to reach the June 20 record close of 1,706.98. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.60% was up 150 points, and had to rise another 965 points to break the Jan. 26 record of 26,616.71.
