NAVI MUMBAI: A bike racer was killed after being hit by a speeding SUV whose driver was under the influence of alcohol on Palm Beach Road on Sunday morning. The SUV driver rammed into a mini-truck ahead of it and injured its driver. The mishap occurred around 3.15am on the Vashi lane, after the Vazirani Sports Club junction in Nerul.
Vishal Ganesh Patil (21) was a resident of Vetalpada, Desai village in Thane district.
Nerul police arrested Hemant Mishra, a resident of MHB Colony, Abhyudaya Nagar, Kalachowkie. He was booked for drunk driving and causing death due to rash and negligent driving. A police complaint was lodged by the mini-truck driver, Rashid Shaikh (36), a resident of Murud, Raigad, who was heading to Colaba to deliver fish.
Shaikh sustained an injury near his right eye as his head banged on the steering wheel due to the impact of the crash. Police rushed the youth in an ambulance to NMMC hospital in Vashi but he was declared brought dead on arrival.
Nerul police said there have been several complaints about youth racing bikes on Palm Beach Road past midnight. George Mendonca
