President-elect, Andrés Manuel López Obrador explains that the idea behind the train is to bring tourism to the places forgotten in the southern part of the country. When done, he mentions that the train will link Cancun with cities in the south of the Yucatan Peninsula. The Trans-Insular Tourist Train will have a total of 12 stations, a route of 833.9 kilometers and an infrastructure cost of 4 billion peso.

He explains that until now, tourism initiations in the southeast of the country have targeted the sun and beach and that “the great growth of hotel infrastructure, dedicated to this sector, is causing severe damage to the ecological and social environment of the area.”

Global travel experts emphasize that the countries that safeguard the best of their cultural and natural heritage will be the most competitive destinations of tomorrow in world tourism. The Transpeninsular Tourist Train of the Southeast is a distinguished tourism product, which comprise numerous easily accessible archaeological sites since “current tourism does not allow the development of the Mayan natives and strongly degrades their natural and cultural environments”.

As per the project, the train will travel 833.9 kilometers to cover the route from Cancun to Palenque with main stops in Tulum, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Bacalar and Calakmul to enhance the attractiveness of the Mundo Maya tourist product and, consequently, the worldwide flow of tourists interested in culture and ecology.
