Coimbatore: A fashion show conducted by college students marked the fourth National Handloom Day celebrations in the city on Tuesday.
The event was held at the Hindusthan College of Arts and Science, where around 80 students from various colleges in the city showcased outfits made of handloom fabric. The event was organised by People’s Seva Centre, a city-based service organisation.

Several contestants said they had embraced handloom fabrics not only out of love for tradition, but as they were also comfortable and allowed them to try various styles.

The organiser, state BJP general secretary Vanathi Srinivasan, said the event was aimed at taking handloom fabrics to youngsters. “From Sirumugai to Negamam, there are several weavers in the region, where several kinds of handwoven fabric are being made. We hope events like these will make people go in for these fabrics.”

As part of the celebrations, exhibition-cum-sale of handloom fabrics were held at the district collectorate and Sirumugai, while free medical camps for handloom weavers were conducted at Pollachi, Kullakkapalayam and Sirumugai.

District collector TN Hariharan disbursed loans to the tune of Rs 11.05 lakh to as many as 23 handloom wavers under the Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency Ltd (Mudra) scheme.
