CHENNAI: Three people died and four others were injured when a speeding car with a 17-year-old boy at the wheel ploughed into a group of people helping paramedics at the site of an accident on East Coast Road near Mamallapuram early on Sunday.
Police said Hemachandra, 26, of
Nungambakkam, and Ekambaram, 50, of T Nagar, and a man in his mid-30s who is yet to be identified, were
killed in the accident at 5am, around 10 minutes after two men on a motorcycle hit a car on the highway.
Three passersby, Ajith, Prem Kumar and Franklin, who also went to the aid of the bikers, and the ambulance driver, Kamala Bharathi, were injured in the accident near the junction of ECR and East Raja Street, leading to Mamallapuram, an investigating officer said.
“It was still dark and the juvenile, a resident of
Thiruvanmiyur who was heading to Puducherry, failed to spot the group on the side of the road,” the officer said.
The boy fled the scene when the car slammed the rear of the ambulance and came to a halt. Police apprehended him around 12 hours later.
