New-age robbers are now armed with card swiping machines to ensure that they get the maximum out of their victims, even if they are not carrying cash.
Last week, Ram Tiwari, a 31-year-old senior executive of a private company, was intercepted by two bike-borne men, who swiped his card using a mobile POS machine at knife-point.
Ram is a resident of south Delhi. He was in Bengaluru to attend a training session on Thursday and was staying in Indiranagar.
On Saturday around 8.40 p.m., he was returning home from work when he was stopped by the duo in Indiranagar. One of them pulled out a knife and demanded his valuables. Ram handed over his wallet, which contained his debit card and ₹470.
The duo took the cash and then pulled out a swiping machine. They swiped the card and asked him for the PIN number at knife-point.
After obtaining the PIN number, the accused swiped thrice, debiting ₹8,000, ₹4,000 and ₹4,400. The accused then returned the card and the wallet before speeding away.
The victim went to the police station the next day to file a complaint. Later, he left for Delhi.
The J.B. Nagar police have taken the details of the transactions and are trying to trace the accused. According to the police, the accused may have linked with a shopkeeper and bought the POS machine for the purpose of the crime.
