FYJC fourth merit list today, one lakh students in the fray in Mumbai

More than 1 lakh students are in the race to get seats in the fourth merit list for admission in first-year junior college.

The list will be declared at 11am on Tuesday.

The list will be the last one in the Centralised Admission Process (CAP), which has seen a lot of delays this year because of an order of the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court.

The court has put a stay on the surrender of quota seats in minority-run colleges before the end of CAP.

While more than 1.40 lakh seats across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) are still vacant, most prominent colleges have filled the general pool after the first three rounds. This has made it tough for high scorers to get a college of their choice.

Many of the high scorers were hoping to get one of the vacant quota seats, but the court order has prevented colleges from releasing them for the general category. More than 58,000 seats from minority junior colleges, some of which belong to top colleges are still not accessible as they would be surrendered only after the fourth admission round.

With a decision on how these seats would be allotted (through merit or on first-come, first-serve basis) still pending, students and parents are anxious and confused.

“Despite scoring 90%, I haven’t got a college of my choice in the first three rounds. The seats in the colleges, which are in my preferences list, are stuck in the various quotas and there are none in the open pool category. I don’t want to go to a lesser known college and have decided to take the risk of waiting for the seats to open up,” said an aspirant in the commerce stream.

Many students, however, have decided to settle for what they have got, fearing that they would lose out on the colleges that they have been allotted.

“If there is no additional round and seats are available for those who claim them first, it would be a big risk waiting,” said Khushi Gala, a student.

Students, who wish to confirm their admissions in the fourth round, can do so between August 7 and 9.
